India Prove Gary Kirsten Right with a Convincing Win Over South Africa

India proved former coach Gary Kirsten right by coasting to an easy, 130-run victory over pre-tournament favourites, South Africa in their second game of the ICC World Cup 2015 today in Melbourne.

ShikharGiven India’s recent poor showing in Australia, most past cricketers had written off MS Dhoni’s men in blue. But South African Gary Kirsten had consistently held that reigning champions India had the strength to pull off a title win this time too. Let’s see if India continue to prove him right.

It was Gary Kirsten who guided India, as coach, to the World Cup title in 2011.

South Africa had hired him as a consultant for the ongoing World Cup to tap his knowledge of the Indian players.

Shikhar, Rahane Shine: But that did not stop him from articulating India’s prospects in the championship. Why should independent, objective opinion be held back? His role for South Africa could not stop India from beating them easily as well.

vbk-02-Rahane_2089253gIndia were helped by sterling performances by Shikhar Dhawan, named player of the match for his 137, and Rahane who scored 79 off just 60 balls. India completed their 50 overs scoring 307 for 7.

Gary KirstenGood bowling by Ashwin, Mohit Sharma and Shami helped India bundle out South Africa for 177 with all its star players AB de Villiers, David Miller and Duminy coming up as flops.

Dhoni’s Praise for Jadeja: In his victory speech, Dhoni was effusive in his praise for Jadeja though there was no reason for him to do so. It was Shami, Mohit and Ashwin who helped India get rid of South Africa’s best and most dangerous batsmen. Jadeja has always been a Dhoni beneficiary!

This is a captain on his way out seeking to ensure that his friend continues to be in the good books of the BCCI.

Nonetheless, good showing, India!
