What’s in Common Between Modi and Michelle Obama?

Being once Ashamed of their Nationality?

whatsincommonIn 2008, US First Lady Michelle Obama was reported to have said thatfor the first time in my adult lifetime I am proud of my country because it feels like hope is finally making a comeback.”

That was during a few of her election campaigns when it was clear that her husband, Mr Barack Hussein Obama, was on the threshold of becoming the first Black President of the USA.

This week, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi emulated Mrs Obama by saying, while addressing groups of Indians in Seoul and Shanghai, that “there was a time when people used to say we don’t know what sins we committed in our past life that we were born in Hindustan.

“Earlier, you felt ashamed of being born Indian. Now you feel proud to represent the country”, Mr Modi said.

obama-michelleBy implication, Mr Modi must also have entertained such thoughts – of being ashamed to be an Indian until he became the PM (or the CM earlier).

True he was speaking only to NRIs but I don’t think anyone left the country because they were ashamed of being Indians. They left because of the lucrative offers overseas.

Foot-in-the-mouth disease: If an Ivy League-educated person (Mrs Obama) can suffer from a foot-in-the-mouth disease why cannot Mr Modi with humble beginnings?

No wonder Mr Modi and Mr Obama became good opportunistic friends!

Mrs Obama’s comments drew big protests among Americans but her husband still went on to win the election, becoming America’s 44th President.

Perhaps Americans like to be seen as globalists without confining themselves to a jingoistic dispensation.

Speaking the Truth: Likewise, Mr Modi’s image does not appear to have taken any big hit as his devotees only think he was only speaking the truth – that the Congress had made Indians feel ashamed with their misrule and that it was only Mr Modi who has made the countrymen swell with pride.

Indians indeed have a great sense of pride at Mr Modi’s role in the Gujarat riots that left thousands killed. How appalling!.

But there can be no denying that Mrs Sonia Gandhi and her corrupt Congress government did all they can to make Indians feel ashamed of their country.

MichelleDamage control by Obama’s Crew: In the U.S., Mr Obama’s campaign leaders were quick to initiate damage control by saying that “Michelle is, of course, proud of her country which is why she and Barack talk constantly about how their story wouldn’t be possible in any other nation on earth. What she meant was that she’s really proud at this moment because for the first time in a long time, thousands of Americans who’ve never participated in politics before are coming out in record numbers to build a grassroots movement for change.”

Mr Modi’s henchmen and henchwomen did not have to indulge in any face-saving exercise as they assert he did no wrong and was only making a factual statement.

But why is it Indians are still fleeing the country at the first opportunity they get? Modi or no Modi, the millions stuck there will still leave the country if given a chance!
