A reverential touch of the Ground, showing his relief on winning Round 1 at Wimbledon
There was no kowtowing or kneeling to kiss the court in reverence and gratitude on his easy first-round victory at Wimbledon today.
But reigning champion Novak Djokovic displayed a sense of relief by bending down to touch the ground as if to acknowledge what Mother Court means to him.
That was akin to Indians touching the feet of elders seeking their blessings and the Chinese bringing their foreheads into contact with the ground as a supreme form of respect.
I am impressed, Novak, as much with your brilliance on the court as with the religiosity and humility you showed on sailing through to Round 2 with a straight-set win over Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber.
