In a post on November 20, 2015, BJP Going Bonkers over Nehru, I had explained why the BJP was missing no opportunity to show its mean face by doing all it can to bring discredit to Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi. The reason, in my view, was: It wants history to record Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the only saviour of India.
The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) saga is another testament to it. Supporters of the Government even launched a campaign to have JNU shut down.
In an opinion piece in NDTV, Dr Chandan Mitra, a BJP MP and Editor of The Pioneer, argued: “The self-destructive agitation at JNU has given the government the best opportunity to shut it down for ever, cut its financial losses, and get rid of a factory that produces only spongers and malcontents.”
Many others from within the BJP and its constituents were also vociferous with a similar demand.
Dr Subramaniam Swamy wanted a temporary shutdown so the JNU can be purified.
The venom is perhaps not as much against the university as it is against the man whose name it carries. The unrest over JNU is a warning that any entity carrying the Nehru name will invite the wrath of the current Government running India.
