The reigning world champion from Norway, Magnus Carlsen, has retained his crown, deservingly so. But it was not before Russian Sergey Karjakin gave him a fright by winning Round 8 out of the 12-game series.
That had Carlsen on the back foot for the first time in three championships. He, however, came back strongly and restored parity in Round 10.
The next two rounds ended in draws with the championship going down to the wire, with Carlsen emerging victorious with a 3-1 tiebreak win earlier in New York today.
In the final match, Carlsen came up with a stunning Queen sacrifice that clinched him the title for the third time.
