BJP After Corruption? Why is Kalmadi, Sheila Dikshit, Raja Not Behind Bars?

Anyone who imagines that the BJP government in India is doing everything it can to keep the country free of corruption is obviously oblivious to fraudsters continuing to flourish even more than 30 months after Narendra Modi’s ascendancy to power.

The likes of Suresh Kalmadi, former president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and Sheila Dikshit, who was unseated by Arvind Kejriwal as Chief Minister of Delhi in 2014, must be behind bars for the international shame they brought to India during the Commonwealth Games 2010.

Instead, Kalmadi has now been made patron of the IOA and Sheila Dikshit is set to be the Congress chief ministerial candidate in Uttar Pradesh.

India’s participation in the Olympics itself was in doubt when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) ruled that Kalmadi “cannot hold any position in the national body as he has been implicated in various corruption scandals.”

India’s Sports Minister Vijay Goel has expressed shock at the IOA honour for Kalmadi, saying it was unacceptable. But he is no saint as Mr Goel too had landed himself in polemics during this year’s Rio Games. I had blogged about it here:

The world knows India follows no ethical values though it likes to talk as it if is rooted in rich traditions no other nation can match.
