The Maestro does it Again, Gets his 18th Grand Slam Title

It was more than Vintage Tennis, an Edge-of-the-Seat Thriller

It was tennis at its vintage best as the Swiss maestro, Roger Federer, played scintillating tennis to defeat his old-time rival, Rafael Nadal, to win the Australian Open title tonight.

The win gave Federer his 18th Grand Slam title, his first in five years, and spectators more than their money’s worth. What an edge-of-the-seat thriller it turned out to be!

He appeared determined not to let Nadal be his nemesis yet again.

Despite gifting away points through unforced errors and missing sitters at regular intervals, Federer was able to wrest the match from Nadal’s grip with incredible aces and a mix of forehand and backhand winners.

Pundits never gave Federer or Nadal any chance at the start of the tournament with Murray, Djokovic, Wawrinka and Nishikori being among the favourites.

In fact, the initial focus was on whether Federer will retain his place among the top 30. If he had failed to make it past the third round he will have fallen out of that bracket.

This is a significant win for Federer, having come into the tournament after a six-month hiatus.

At 35, FedEx has demonstrated it is too early to write him off yet. And 2017 may even turn out to be his best year yet.
