Prior to this year’s French Open, I had not even heard of Latvian Jelena Ostapenko. Possibly because I had stopped following tennis as much as I used to until a few years ago.
On the other hand, I had watched Simona Halep play at the 2014 WTA finals in Singapore – an event that also had participation from the likes of Serena Williams, Sharapova, Eugenie Bouchard, Ana Ivanovic and Wozniacki.
Today, unseeded Ostapenko (20), chirpy and cheerful, was clearly the crowd favourite. She also did not disappoint them either – becoming one of the youngest French Open champions, giving Halep no chance in the final with great serves, powerful smashes and easy winners.
I loved the coverage on SingTel Mio TV and tomorrow is going to be even more exciting. Will Nadal, certain to start as a crowd favourite, take home another Grand Slam title, fending off any challenge from Wawrinka?
