I woke up to the unbelievably shocking death of Sridevi, known for memorable performances in films such as Balu Mahendra’s Moondram Pirai, which was remade as Sadma in Hindi.
I saw her on the sets of the Tamil movie, Guru, when a song sequence involving her and Kamalahaasan was being filmed. The two were one of cinema’s hottest pairs then – and not without reason. I was interviewing Kamal then for a youth magazine, I, that a group of us from the Madras Christian College launched.
Sridevi was a wholesome, complete star – versatile brilliance, beauty and glamour. She had a strong comeback with English Vinglish and Puli.
Kamal won the national award for Moondram Pirai for his stirring performance. Sridevi’s performance was equally powerful and it did leave her fans disappointed when she missed out on an award.
Sridevi was only 54 when she died of a sudden cardiac arrest in Dubai where she had gone to for a wedding. She will be missed!
