Two years ago, publicity-hungry Union Minister Smriti Irani kicked up a big storm when she spotted a camera while she was changing clothes at a shop in BJP-ruled Goa. She did not let the store and offenders go scot-free, rightly so!
Today, when India is outraged at the kidnap, torture, rape and murder of an eight-year-old child in a temple over an eight-day period Smriti Irani’s first comments are that the opposition is politicising the issue.
“Minority, Minority’, then ‘Dalit, Dalit’ and now ‘Women, Women’
Another BJP MP, Meenakshi Lekhi, was just as callous, saying: “You see their (Congress’) plan: first shout ‘minority, minority’, then ‘Dalit, Dalit’ and now ‘women, women’ and then try to somehow fix blame of state issues on the Centre. All this while ignoring the strict action being taken by state governments.”
The Congress and the other opposition parties who are seeking to take political mileage out of a distressing incident that has shamed India are no better than the BJP in dealing with sexual crimes.
Just that the BJP has more sexual predators in its ranks than the Congress – leading a crime-laden life shamefully in the name of religion!
The nation needs a political alternative and an environment where there is no room for these mainstream parties.
