Women, India’s Pride at Commonwealth Games

Time for India and Indians to Look Beyond Cricket

Women were the real stars of India’s good showing at the Commonwealth Games that’s is concluding on the Gold Coast today.

Their performances in three events, in particular, stood out – Table Tennis, Badminton and Shooting. They quelled Singapore’s dominance in these three disciplines, as this report in today’s edition of The Straits Times points to.

Indian women won the gold in Table Tennis team and singles events, with similar results in Badminton too, demonstrating consistency and excellence.

But among men, there was no individual gold in both the sports. Sharath Kamal was routed 4-0 by a Nigerian player in the semi-final while Srikanth settled for silver in badminton.

Overall, it was great showing by the athletes, with gold medals coming in from a few other events too such as boxing, weightlifting and wrestling.

It is time India and Indians started looking beyond Cricket for sporting glory.
