Hosts Russia Sail through, Spain a Superior Team Without Scoring Sting
Russia is through to the quarter finals with a penalty shootout win over Spain tonight.
It may seem an unfair result but a team that was unable to score a goal in 120 minutes of play, including extra time, despite being in possession of the ball the bulk of the time, just does not have the sting to deserve a passage to the next round.
Spain had many shots at the goal but the Russian keeper was brilliantly up to the challenge, saving every one of them.
Russia got one from the spot in the first half.
It was with a Russian own goal that Spain opened its score.
For the record, Russia won 4-3 on penalties and will face the winner of the Croatia-Denmark match.
It is a sad outcome but there is no point opening up a discussion again on whether penalties should be the way to pick a winner.
