Thaipusam: Influences to and From India

I had hardly heard of Thaipusam until I moved to Singapore from Chennai two decades ago. Now, though, it is gaining traction in Tamil Nadu, with inspiration from Singapore and Malaysia.

I visited the Little India area in Singapore yesterday a few hours before the Thaipusam procession was to kick in. The roads were barricaded and crowds had started to trickle in. Religious songs were being played and refreshments were bring provided along the way.
A profusion of saffron was hard to miss, with shops selling ochre clothing. That, I guess, is influence from the current dispensation in India. Influence works both ways!
