We had an interesting Genesys Christmas lunch at the Tower Club, Republic Plaza, today.
Located on the 62nd floor of the building (our office is on the 18th floor), it has the usual restrictions associated with premier private clubs.
No Jeans? You can Still Be in!: The dress code is one – so no jeans! As this was an unplanned lunch, and we are generally an informal group (typical of tech companies), 100% compliance became out of question.
But the Club had an easy and quick fix – they offered a jacket for those who did not meet the code. Wear the jacket and the jeans is pass! I found this simple workaround welcome flexibility from a club!
They have a right to ensure that what members wear is appropriate for a club environment!
Mobile phones were off limits, too! Well, that was the written word and, possibly, the norm. That code was, nonetheless, not enforced – wisely enough!
A plush private club in a multi-storied building may appear incongruous when weighed against those that are housed in sprawling estates. That luxury can hardly be expected in any prime CBD area.
The grandeur you will expect in any such club was, though, evident, with rich interior ornamentation. It offered great views of the Bay and the Singapore skyline as well.
With Christmas just two days away, it was sparsely occupied. Former Singapore Minister Lim Boon Heng was among the few having a quiet lunch with a small group there.
